Whether you target a specific time of year, a particular species at it's peak or
planning a fishing charter along with your family vacation to Morehead City,
Atlantic Beach, the Crystal Coast of North Carolina, Island Girl Charters can
take you there. Let me wet your fishing appetite by telling you what awaits
you off our beautiful coast throughout the year. In the spring, beginning in
mid-March through mid-May, yellow fin tuna are being caught in good
numbers. The Gulf Stream, which usually takes us about an hour and a half
to get to, yields good catches of highly sought after species. As we get in April
big bull dolphin, weighing upward of 50 up
about this time are prize game fish such as blue marlin, white marlin and
sail fish. Morehead City host one of the areas biggest blue marlin
tournaments in the middle of June, with the winning purse close to a million
dollars. This tournament lures big game anglers from all over the east coast.
As summer approaches, the Yellow fin slow down in numbers, but increase
in size, averaging 60-90 lbs. each. The dolphin size also goes down, but when
we find floating debris or a good weed line, we will frequently find large
schools and catch our limit of 60 per day. We can do this with just light tackle
in just an hour or so. Wahoo and king usually fill the fish box as well. As
fall approaches, and the water begins to cool down, we start catching the
big king mackerels 30 to 50 lbs. These are usually caught using live bait
and 20 lb tackle. By then, the yellow fin and wahoo are jumping out of
the water saying "pick me, pick me". September and October yields
some of the best wahoo fishing there is. Good fishing usually last
through November. By December, the "big" boys are showing up. By this
I mean the highly sought after blue fin tuna. These spectacular fish
average 200 to 400 lbs. With a number of the weighing up to 700 lbs. If
you are up for one of the most unforgettable adventures of your life,
book a charter during this time of year to try your skills at landing one of
these massive giants. Blue fin fishing usually from December into
February. For those who want to stay closer to the beach, Island Girl
Charters offers 5 to 8 hour charters for Spanish and Kings. In December
and January, big striper or rock fish start striking around the shoals and
shore line. Most of these are in the 30 to 50 lb. range. In the early spring,
we catching our limits of blue fish around the inlets and beach. When the
water warms to around 70 degrees, the Spanish Mackerel are plentiful.
Good Spanish fishing last well into October. King Mackerel fishing along
the beach is usually best in the fall as well. For those who's passion is fly
fishing, the Albacore tuna start showing in September. Island Girl Charters
